Esmeraldo lived a long life, during which he loved his guardians and they loved him. He died, after multiple hospital visits during his final two months, on February 22nd, 2005, at 4:44 p.m. at Rancho Europa, while in Clark's favorite chair.
Esmeraldo was named for his green eyes. So Y's favorite colored stone, the emerald, was combined with Costa Smeralda, in Sardinia, to name this miraculous feline. His final resting place is a silver ice bucket from Sardinia, a birthday gift given to Y in Sardinia many years ago.
Many thanks to Dr. Estacio in Pasadena, California, Dr. Eppinger in Nederland, Colorado, the doctors at Alpine Hospital in Boulder, Bruce Heath of Silverthorne, Colorado, and especially to Jennifer Stewart of Nederland (Esmeraldo's best friend and guardian while Clark and Y were on travel) for all of their special TLC for Esmeraldo Chapman.
