Abstract: | The Earth is a heat engine that powers convection in the mantle core and mantle. This convection produces the geomagnetic field and drives the tectonism in the lithosphere that leads to earthquakes and volcanism on the Earth’s surface. In this talk, we will briefly discuss what we know about this heat engine and describe the resulting geomagnetic field, including secular variation, polarity reversals, and polar wander. We will briefly review global seismology and what earthquakes tell us about the dynamic processes on the Earth's surface and in the Earth’s interior. We will show some examples of the power of earthquakes, highlighting the damage from the 2023 Turkey earthquakes, among other recent big earthquakes. Finally, we will describe how geomagnetism and seismology fit into our work in geological site investigations and seismic hazard analyses. | ||||
